H I S T O R Y

Founded in the late 1700’s by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician and master chemist, homeopathy is a natural form of complementary and alternative medicine based on the principle of “like cures like”. A much diluted preparation of a natural substance that causes symptoms in healthy individuals eliminates those same symptoms by tuning the body’s vital force and replacing dis-ease with well being.

Homeopathy was brought to the US in 1825 by American doctors who studied in Europe. By 1902 there were 15,000 practicing homeopathic physicians, 22 homeopathic medical schools, more than 100 homeopathic teaching hospitals, over 60 orphan asylums and old people's homes, and 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies in the US.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS:

  • In 1900 at Scott Circle in downtown Washington, D.C. a monument was dedicated by President McKinley to Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, which was later rededicated in 2000.

  • At least eleven American presidents used homeopathy or sponsored legislation for its practice including Lincoln, Harrison, McKinley, Coolidge, Harding, Hoover, and Clinton.

  • Following the appearance of super model Cindy Crawford on the Oprah Show, Oprah included the topic of homeopathy in her “Spotlight on Health” section on OPRAH.com

During the 19th century, health care options in the US were wide open. The public could choose between nutritional medicine, hydrotherapy, eclectics, ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, herbalism, midwifery, or a regular physician. By the end of the 19th century, osteopathy, chiropractic, and naturopathy had also come into the mainstream.

In 1847 the AMA was formed and with the help of the fledgling pharmaceutical industry, lobbied throughout the decades for restrictive legislation until our current model of healthcare has become the official one. Healthcare legislation in this country was not demanded by the people, who have always shown a preference for freedom of choice when the referendum was put before them, but by the physicians whose interest it was and still is to discredit the competition.

Homeopathy is once more becoming a household word in the United States as consumers seek natural and safe alternatives as well as complementary care to conventional therapies. As 21st century biology catches up with the science of quantum physics, national newspapers, radio, and television talk shows regularly present healthcare alternatives based on holistic and energetic principles.
